From Venus II 2018 UK / Materials : Veils and projection / Dimensions : Variable

This is a second appearance of the installation From Venus for which i described as: ‘Men and women are often united, or in cases separated, by marriage. The motif of the trees in the projection which appears dry and weak symbolises the fact that even the strongest trees would struggle to grow in difficult conditions.’ This time, the setting was at The Old Church at Stoke Newington as part of Dronica Festival #9 which mainly featured experimental electronic music.

In January 2016, I was amongst the six artists invited by the residents of Space36 to spend several months working in the space and studying its history and the lives of its past and present inhabitants. The results were shown over the weekends of 11/12 and 18/19 June in an exhibition called The Secret Life of no:36 which formed part of the Crouch End Festival.

This work is inspired by a letter from a wig company found in the house when the current inhabitants first moved into no:36. The letter is believed to have been addressed to the previous occupiers of no:36, Mr and Mrs Gue. Through an interview I conducted with the current inhabitants, I learned that Mr and Mrs Gue had lived a very reclusive life that was closed off from the outer world. Through this work, I wish to bring the couple out of the house so that they can connect with their neighbourhood.

The faces in the images are blurred to suggest that Mr and Mrs Gue might have passed away already. This also helps to highlight their hair instead as inspired by the letter from the wig company which the couple could be clients of.

I made two other installations during this residency, namely The Usual Suspects 2016 and a sound piece Wigs and Murder 2016.

The Usual Suspects 2016 UK / Materials : Photographs on Paper / Dimensions : Variable

This work is inspired by a newspaper fragment that was found under a floor board when the current owners of the house first moved into the property. The news was about the murder case of PC Blakelock where the suspect Silcott was cleared of the allegations. The work incorporates cropped photos of the current residents, the previous owners, Winston Silcott who was a murder suspect, and PC Blakelock the victim of the murder.

The work raises awareness that we are all usual suspects in ‘crimes’ that we commit on a daily basis regardless of our backgrounds.

I made two other installations during this residency, namely Undercover Mr and Mrs Gue 2016 and a sound piece Wigs and Murder 2016.

This is one of the four pieces of work in the duo exhibition with Stephanie Conway named Room 101. The exhibition explores the theme of unity/disunity drawing on the reference of George Owell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four where Room 101 is a place for people to face their fear. This piece of work uses wedding veils as a material which echoes the other piece From Mars (Objects) where men’s handkerchieves are used. Diffusion of Happy Rice Bags 2011 UK / Materials : Used tea bags, images, rice and thread / Dimensions : Variable

I collected used tea bags over a period of time. the tea bags were emptied and then filled with rice. I created a new tag using the image of the Queen.

This piece of work was shown at the exhibition Hong Kong Whispers. It signifies the diffusion of one culture into another, which is a global phenomenon. Hong Kong, being a city that has English history, is a place where cultures cross.

Healing Broken Clouds 2009 UK / Materials : Broken crockery and cotton wool / Dimensions : Variable

Pieces of crockery were smashed in order to form cracks, which become part of the materials. The cotton wool provides a contrast to the hardness of the crockery, yet the two materials possess the same colour. Above the frame, some unbroken crockery pieces are standing on the edge as if they are waiting to fall and to be healed.

The initial idea of the work came from the word ‘china’.
Split and re-united. Just like the country.

The context of any story or one’s personal circumstance affects how we understand things and read meanings. Books and text become objects that dissolve into the surroundings in this installation.

The River of Identity 2007 HK / Materials : Objects, boxes, reflective glass panels and LED lights / Dimensions : 300cm (L) x 30cm (W) x 70cm (H)

Boxes contain objects from the past. The objects have either history, cultural or personal significance. Lights in each box go on and off at different orders, signifying memories of the past being ephemeral. Viewers can see their own reflections on the glass panels when the lights are off, hence adding themselves into the work.
